Welcome to this week's Solar Robotics Newsletter, produced by Straylight Ventures, where we cover the latest in robotics, automation, and AI transforming utility-scale solar. This week brought a major commercial launch, a new microgrid company, a Y Combinator spotlight, and a field demonstration in Brazil.
ποΈ Construction & DeploymentCharge Robotics Launches Sunrise, an Assembly Line for Solar ConstructionCharge Robotics announced the commercial launch of Sunrise, a portable factory that automates the installation of tracking systems and solar panels. The company says Sunrise now handles about 75% of the work that goes into building a utility-scale solar plant. Demand for new power generation is outpacing the workforce available to build it, and solar remains the cheapest technology to deploy at scale. After completing its first two commercial projects this year, Charge is fully booked through 2027 and is already taking reservations for 2028 capacity. β Watch the announcementβ β‘ Energy & GridMicora Emerges With Microgrids That Ship Anywhere and Set Up Without LaborAshten Akemoto introduced Micora (micora.com), a new company building microgrids-in-a-box: shippable containers that package solar, wind, or other generation with batteries into hybrid systems designed to beat diesel generators on reliability, availability, and cost. The systems are built to power communities, businesses, and remote operations without installation labor. Micora is building with Y Combinator's F26 batch alongside co-founders Frederik Mareels and Chris Choo, and the team says it is already working on its first energy projects. β Read the announcementβ π€ Autonomy & RoboticsY Combinator Spotlights Cosmic Robotics for Automating Solar ConstructionY Combinator featured Cosmic Robotics, which builds robots for construction work still largely done by hand, a bottleneck for solar farms, data centers, and other infrastructure. The company's robots have installed 11,000 solar panels and it recently signed a contract with the largest construction company in the country. Cosmic Robotics is also hiring Forward Deployed Engineers to scale its field deployments, drawing from a team with backgrounds at SpaceX, Google, Amazon, Tesla, Zoox, Nuro, and Built Robotics. β Watch the featureβ π Field ValidationSolarCleano's L1 Robot Proves Itself at a Utility-Scale Brazilian PlantVolluto Soluçáes TecnolΓ³gicas ran a live demonstration of SolarCleano's L1 cleaning robot at a large centralized solar generation plant in Brazil, covering thousands of modules. The team reported a homogeneous, fast, and safe clean with no observed damage to the modules during the demonstration. The event drew representatives from several Brazilian energy operators, a sign of growing interest in automated cleaning as utility-scale plants look to cut soiling losses at scale. β Watch the demonstrationβ π€ PartnershipsARENA Backs Equans' $25 Million Push to Test Solar Robotics at ScaleThe Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is providing up to $25 million to support Equans Solar & Storage's Lightspeed program, a three-year initiative to test and deploy up to 10 innovative technologies across its solar and storage pipeline. The project spans civil, mechanical, and electrical work as well as operations, maintenance, and digital coordination. The first technology to be tested is the Nextpower Ranger, an autonomous inspection robot, marking its first use at an Australian solar farm. β Read moreβ ποΈ Interviews & CultureGritt Launches a Video Series on the Engineers Building Its MachinesGritt kicked off its "People Building Gritt" series with an episode featuring Rihn Hong, an MIT-trained mechanical engineer on the team. Hong describes splitting her time between building machines in the office and supporting Gritt's equipment in the field for customers. "We're sending out our machines to places where robot arms and machines like this don't normally exist," Hong says in the video. "So it's a brand new frontier." β Watch the episodeβ Open Roles
